Steel Ball Bearing A steel ball bearing is a rolling-element bearing that uses hardened steel balls as rolling elements between two concentric rings (the inner ring and the outer ring). Its main function is to reduce friction between moving parts, support loads, and enable smooth rotation of shafts and machinery components. Key Components Inner Ring – fits onto the rotating shaft. Outer Ring – mounted inside a housing. Steel Balls – roll between the two rings, carrying the load. Cage (retainer) – holds the balls evenly spaced. Seals/Shields (optional) – protect against dust and retain lubricant. Material Usually made from high-carbon chromium bearing steel (e.g., AISI 52100). Offers high hardness, fatigue resistance, and durability. Variants may include stainless steel ball bearings for corrosion resistance. Types of Steel Ball Bearings Deep Groove Ball Bearings – most common, handle radial + moderate axial loads. Angular Contact Ball Bearings – for combined radial and higher axial loads.
