In Extra High Voltage (EHV) cable networks (66kV to 500kV), the SVL and Link Box work together to protect the cable's outer sheath from electrical breakdown while managing power losses.1. Sheath Voltage Limiter (SVL)An SVL is a specialized surge arrester made of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) varistors. Purpose: It protects the cable's anticorrosive jacket (PVC/PE) from puncturing during lightning strikes, switching surges, or short-circuit faults. Operation: It remains "invisible" (non-conductive) during normal operation. If a voltage surge exceeds its threshold, it instantly conducts the surge to the ground, "clamping" the voltage to a safe level. Ratings: Typically rated between 1kV and 9kV depending on the calculated induced voltage of the specific cable run. 2. EHV SVL Link BoxThe Link Box is the physical enclosure where cable sheaths are terminated and managed. It is usually a heavy-duty, IP68-rated stainless steel box installed in underground pits or on transition poles.Key Internal Components: Removable Copper Links: Robust bars used to connect or disconnect the sheath from the ground (critical for maintenance and sheath integrity testing). Internal SVLs: The limiters are housed inside the box, connected between the sheath and the earth busbar. Phase Insulators: High-grade insulators that keep the different phase sheaths isolated from each other and the box body. 3. Common Bonding Configurations Single-Point Bonding: The cable sheath is grounded at one end; the other end is connected to an SVL Link Box to limit "standing voltage" (the voltage that builds up on the ungrounded end). Cross-Bonding: Used for long distance EHV runs. Sheaths are transposed (swapped) between phases inside the Link Box to cancel out magnetic induction, which eliminates circulating currents and prevents the cable from overheating.
