What is Thermal Expansion? Thermal expansion is the term used to describe the expansion of water volume as it is heated. Why Thermal Expansion Tank? Expansion tanks are the best solution to provide expansion and contraction control of thermal transfer fluids in closed loop solar heating systems. They are integral safety device for every solar heating project to protect safety valves from failing or wearing out quickly, avoids valve stem and ball seal leaks, prevents wasted BTUs, and vastly extends water heater life. How it works: They feature a specialized EPDM Diaphragm that captures the expansion and condensation of the solar heat transfer fluid during changing climatic conditions, also known as "Stagnation."
