The Triaxial Testing System is designed for testing 38 mm diameter soil specimens in accordance with IS 2720 (Part XII) and is suitable for determining the shear strength and stress–strain characteristics of soils under controlled confining and back-pressure conditions. The system consists of a triaxial cell for 38 mm diameter specimens with a stationary bushing arrangement, Perspex loading pad, pair of 38 mm diameter × 6 mm thick plain Perspex discs, pair of 38 mm diameter × 6 mm thick porous stones, split sand former, sheath stretcher, one dozen synthetic rubber sheaths, suitable synthetic rubber O-rings, and a plastic drainage tube. The apparatus is provided with a robust 50 kN capacity loading frame having three selectable loading speeds for controlled axial loading. A 500 kg capacity load cell is provided for accurate measurement of axial load, while a precision LVDT with 0.01 mm resolution and 25 mm travel is used for measuring axial displacement. The system incorporates pressure sensors and a constant air/water pressure arrangement comprising two water-filled pressure chambers, with pressure supplied by an air compressor having a capacity of up to 10 kg/cm² for applying and maintaining the required confining and back pressures. Two pressure gauges and pressure control valves are provided for independent monitoring and regulation of pressure, with pressure gauges having an accuracy of 0.1 kg/cm² for precise pressure control. The complete system is operated through a microprocessor-based controller with dedicated software for measurement, control, data acquisition, monitoring, and recording of axial load, displacement, cell pressure, back pressure, and other relevant test parameters. The integrated system provides accurate, stable, and repeatable test conditions and is suitable for conducting controlled triaxial tests on 38 mm diameter soil specimens as per the applicable requirements of IS 2720 (Part XII).
