For softer materials, a 118° point is often used. Some twist drill bits, particularly those used for precision work, have split points (a split at the tip) that help reduce the tendency of the bit to wander off the mark when starting the hole. Material Composition: Twist drill bits can be made from various materials, including high-speed steel (HSS), cobalt, tungsten carbide, and carbon steel. The material determines the bit's durability, heat resistance, and suitability for different materials. HSS: Standard twist drill bits are typically made of HSS, which is versatile, affordable, and heat-resistant enough for a wide variety of materials. Cobalt: For tougher materials like stainless steel, cobalt drill bits are preferred due to their higher hardness and wear resistance. Carbide-Tipped: For drilling hard metals or masonry, carbide-tipped or full carbide drill bits offer extreme hardness and durability. Shank: The shank is the part of the drill bit that fits into the drill chuck. Shanks can be straight (cylindrical) or hexagonal for a better grip in power tools. The shank size and type should match the chuck size of the drill being used. Common Types of Twist Drill Bits: Standard Twist Drill Bits: These are the most common type, with general-purpose HSS construction. They are great for drilling into wood, plastic, and metal. Cobalt Twist Drill Bits: These bits contain a percentage of cobalt and are highly resistant to heat and wear. Masonry Drill Bits: These have a carbide tip that is specifically designed for drilling into concrete, brick, and stone. The fluted body design helps remove dust and debris from the hole. Step Drill Bits: These bits have a conical shape with a series of steps or diameters. They allow you to drill holes of multiple sizes with the same bit, often used for sheet metal and plastic.
