Gradient for cyclists should not generally exceed 6%, although very short sections with up to 10% might be acceptable. For longer ascends gradients should be reduced to 2-3% (but see also the discussion further).An existing ramp of 1 meter in height with a horizontal distance of 10 meters, will have a slope of 10%.The maximum recommended slope of ramps is 1:20. Steeper slopes may be allowed in special cases depending on the length to be covered (fig. 4). Ramps should be provided with landings for resting, manoeuvring and avoiding excessive speed.Measure total rise (how many inches from lower level to upper level) and divide by the slope.It doesn't matter exactly what it means, 20% is steeper than 10%. In surveying 20% is interpreted as 20% of a right angle (i.e. a brick wall) and so would be 18 degrees.
