A water chiller is a device used to lower the temperature of water. Most chillers use refrigerant in a closed loop system to facilitate heat exchange from water where the refrigerant is then pumped to a location where the waste heat is transferred to the atmosphere.Using the energy equation of Q = ṁ x Cp x ΔT we can calculate the cooling capacity. We add 273.15K to the celcius to convert it to units of Kelvin. The Specific heat capacity (Cp) is measured in units of kJ per kg per Kelvin. This gives us a final answer of Q = 2,500kW of cooling.Divide Q (BTUs per hour) by 12,000 (the number of BTUs in one ton of cooling capacity). This yields the chiller capacity required to handle the process heat load in tons per hour: Example: 240,000/12,000= 20 tons/hr.
