A water softener is an appliance that uses sodium chloride to remove positively charged calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) ions from water. There are 3 types of water softener plants; automatic, semi-automatic, and manual.A water softener reduces the dissolved calcium, magnesium, and to some degree manganese and ferrous iron ion concentration in hard water. These “hardness ions” cause three major kinds of undesired effects.
