They operate by passing the polluted air through a liquid (usually water) where contaminants are absorbed or dissolved. Wet scrubbers are widely used in industries such as chemical processing, steelmaking, power generation, and wastewater treatment.Here's how wet scrubbers generally work:1. **Contact with Liquid**: The polluted air is brought into contact with a liquid medium (water or other suitable liquid) inside the scrubber. This can be done through various configurations such as spray nozzles, packed beds, or impingement plates.2. **Absorption**: Contaminants in the air stream come into contact with the liquid medium. Depending on the nature of the contaminants, they may be absorbed into the liquid or react chemically with it.3. **Neutralization or Removal**: For acidic or basic gases, wet scrubbers can neutralize them by adjusting the pH of the scrubbing liquid. Particulate matter and other pollutants may also be physically trapped or dissolved in the liquid.4. **Collection**: The clean air exits the scrubber while the contaminated liquid is collected at the bottom of the scrubber vessel.5. **Treatment of Captured Contaminants**: The collected liquid, now containing the pollutants, is treated further to either recover valuable materials or safely dispose of the contaminants.Wet scrubbers can be designed in various configurations to suit different applications and pollutant types.
