The Crompton Greaves (CG) ZLA3E is a Station Class, gapless Metal Oxide Surge Arrester (MOSA) designed for high-voltage protection in substations. For a 132kV system, the ZLA3E typically has a rated voltage of 120kV and is used to shield transformers and other critical equipment from lightning and switching surges Arrester Rating: 120kV rms. Max Continuous Operating Voltage (MCOV/COV): 102kV rms. Nominal Discharge Current: 10kA (peak) with an 8/20 µs wave. Line Discharge Class: Class 3 (as per IEC 60099-4). Impulse Withstand (BIL): 650kVp for the housing. Energy Capability: Minimum 6kJ/kV referred to the rated voltage. Construction: Typically features approximately 40 Zinc Oxide (ZnO) discs in a two-unit assembly. Key Features of CG ZLA3E Gapless Design: Offers a quick response to surge voltages and high energy dissipation without the mechanical complexity of spark gaps. ZnO Technology: Uses high-quality Zinc Oxide elements with superior non-linear voltage-current characteristics for stable performance. Monitoring: Often paired with a Surge Counter (e.g., Model SC 23-1) and a leakage current meter to track the number of operations and monitor the health of the ZnO blocks. Safety: Includes a pressure relief device (Class A/40kA) to safely vent internal gases in case of failure.
