The Crompton Greaves (CG) ZLA3E is a Station Class, gapless Metal Oxide Surge Arrester designed to protect 33 kV electrical systems (transformers, capacitor banks, and switchgear) from transient overvoltages caused by lightning or switching operations.Technical Specifications (33 kV System) Arrester Rating: Typically 30 kV (rms) for standard 33 kV systems (36 kV highest system voltage). Nominal Discharge Current (): 10 kA (peak) with an 8/20 µs wave. Line Discharge Class: Class 3. Short Circuit Rating: Up to 40 kA (rms). Impulse Withstand: lightning impulse withstand voltage of 325 kVp. Mechanical Strength: Cantilever strength of approximately 70 kg-m or 500 kg depending on specific housing. Key Features Active Element: Uses highly non-linear Zinc Oxide (ZnO) ceramic resistors with a "unique doughnut" construction to ensure uniform density and temperature distribution. Housing Options: Available in both Porcelain (Brown/ANSI-Grey) and Composite/Polymer materials. Safety: Features shatter-proof performance and includes pressure relief devices with arc-diverting ports to prevent housing failure during internal faults. Stability: Low power loss at high temperatures and ultra-stable elements provide enhanced protection during temporary overvoltages. Compliance: Designed according to IEC 60099-4, ANSI-IEEE C62.11, and IS 3070 (Part-3). Optional AccessoriesFor comprehensive monitoring, the CG ZLA3E is often paired with: Surge Counter: A passive, self-powered device to record the number of discharges. Leakage Current Monitor: A built-in milli-ammeter (often IP67 rated) to track the health of the ZnO blocks and check for surface contamination. Insulating Base: Required to isolate the arrester's ground terminal from the main structure so currents pass through the surge counter.
