Lighting Tower
A lighting tower is a mobile, portable unit that consists of a number of high, intensity lamps fixed to a long, extendable mast, created to give a temporary, powerful light to large open spaces. Usually, the lighting towers, which are on a trailer or a skid base, are the same ones that can be seen at the construction sites, roadworks, events, emergency situations, and industrial projects where the need for lighting is there but a permanent infrastructure is not available or is impractical. Here, the towers are powered by onboard generators, which are mostly diesel-powered, but sometimes they are powered by grid electricity or renewable energy sources such as solar panels, thus ensuring they can operate independently. The mast can be raised or lowered in order to change the height and the area of coverage, while the lights are generally metal halide or LED floodlights that emit a bright light for a large area. Lighting towers are made in a way that they can be easily removed from one place and taken to another. They are also equipped with wheels and tow bars, and their construction is such that they can resist bad weather and rough handling. Besides, lighting towers are equipped with safety devices such as emergency stop buttons, tilt sensors, and outriggers for stabilising, which are standard. Lighting towers are the means through which the safety of the workers is guaranteed; thus, the working hours are extended, and the productivity level goes up as the workers are enabled to continue their tasks efficiently in low-light or nighttime conditions. Lighting Tower Related Questions/Answers
What is a lighting tower?
A lighting tower is a mobile tall unit equipped with powerful floodlights or high, intensity lamps that are used to provide temporary illumination over a large area at night. It basically includes a telescopic or a fixed mast that is mounted on a trailer or a skid base and at the top of the mast there is one or more bright light(s) (frequently LED or metal halide). Such towers are found on construction sites, road works, mining areas, events, and places affected by an emergency where there is no permanent lighting installation. Most of the times they are powered by a diesel or petrol generator but they can also be powered by a battery or solar panels, hence they can function in remote or outdoor places where there is no electrical connection. Lighting towers make night work safer, more efficient, and more effective by providing bright lighting to large open areas such as yards, highways, and industrial sites.
What is a tower light used for?
A tower light (or lighting tower) is a device that provides intense, temporary lighting for a large outdoor area, usually where there is no permanent lighting. To make night work safe, they are extensively used on construction sites, road and highway projects, mining areas, and large industrial yards by illuminating the whole work zone in a clear way. Tower lights enable workers to see the right tools, machines, edges, and even dangers, thus the risk of accidents is lessened and post, sunset productivity is increased. They are also employed during events, sports matches, and emergency or disaster response situations to provide light at camps, temporary shelters, and rescue areas. Quite often, tower lights are fixed on trailers or skids and run by diesel generators, thus they are portable and can be used in remote or offgrid areas.
How does a light tower work?
A light tower works because a built in generator, normally fuelled by diesel or petrol, feeds electricity to floodlights fixed on a mast that can be raised. It contains an engine that runs on the generator and generates electrical power supplied to the lamps, usually metal halide or LED, at the top of the tower. The hydraulic, manual, or electric mast is raised several metres high so that the lights can be distributed over a wide area with few shadows. Finally, when the mast is up and the lights are switched on, they provide strong wide-area illumination suitable for construction sites, roads, events, or emergency operations. Most of the modern light towers also have methods of adjusting brightness, timers, and some with tilt and wind sensors. Some models, instead of fuel, are fitted with batteries or solar panels that store energy to run lights without noise or emissions at night.
What KVA is a lighting tower?
Depending on its size and the number of lights, a lighting tower usually has a generator rating somewhere between 5 kVA and 10 kVA. Generally, a mobile lighting tower, which is frequently seen on construction sites and roads, comes with a 5 kVA or 7.5 kVA diesel generator capacity that is adequate for 4 to 6 highintensity LED or metal halide floodlights. Additionally, a smaller or solar, powered lighting tower might have a rating that is as low as 1.23 kVA and is designed for a limited area of lighting. On the other hand, a large, heavy, duty lighting tower for a massive project can have a capacity of 10 kVA or even higher. The kVA rating is a measure of the electrical power output of the internal generator, which should be of the same wattage as the total lights and any other equipment. Most standard portable lighting towers in India are of 57.5 kVA capacity that can be counted on to deliver bright light, clean, and clear at night works on sites, highways, and events.
How many hours does a light tower last?
Typically, a light tower can go anywhere from 60 to 200 hours without refilling the fuel tank, the duration mostly depends on the light tower's size, the capacity of its fuel tank, and the kind of lights. Generally, smaller diesel towers with metal halide lamps work around 60100 hours, whereas new LED lighting towers are more energy-efficient and can be lit for 100200 hours or even longer on a single tank of fuel. Besides, a hybrid or solar-powered tower can keep the lights on for several days or even a few weeks with energy stored from the sun, while a diesel generator is there as a backup. The time a light tower can be used also depends on the condition of whether all lamps will be used and at what maximum power; in other words, if all lighting units are running at full capacity, the total working time is the shortest. In fact, most of the standard mobile lighting towers commonly seen on construction sites and roads are capable of running continuously for 3 to 7 days without the need for refuelling; hence, they are ideal for long night shifts and projects in remote areas.
What are the different types of light towers?
Light towers are of different types depending on the source of energy and models available in the market. The diesel light tower is the most widely used light tower, as it relies on a diesel generator that is portable and suitable for use in light towers needed in rural setups such as mining sites, construction sites, and highways. The second light tower type is the electric light tower; this light tower relies on a connection to the mains electricity supply in a building or company, such as industries located in urban centers. The third type is the solar light tower, which relies on solar energy to charge batteries, making it environmentally clear for use in light towers in areas where electricity is not readily available in cities or Counties located in Africa with insufficient electricity supply in the market. In terms of models, there are light towers that are trailer-mounted; this makes the light tower easy to carry as one can use a car to tow the light tower to a site, skid-mounted light towers, whose light towers are stationery or portable light towers in a site or location, while Telescopic light towers have masts that are lifted or lowered when needed at a particular site or location. The latest light tower model in the market uses light-emitting diode light sources; this model is much better than the previous models.
How much fuel does a light tower use?
Most of the fuel consumption of a light tower is determined by the tower's type, size, and lamps. A modern diesel LED tower of 40kva typically consumes somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0 litre of diesel per hour, therefore it might use 617 litres per day if it is running 12 hours. An old metal halide, can consume from 1.5 to 5 litres of diesel per hour and, hence, be less efficient, using 20120 litres or even more for an entire day.
Do light towers have generators?
Yes, in general, most light towers are equipped with an integrated generator, specifically the diesel, powered mobile types that are usually found on construction sites, roads, and remote projects. Such towers are equipped with a diesel (or occasionally petrol) generator in the same unit, which is responsible for producing the electricity that powers the super, bright floodlights attached to the mast. The generator operates the engine and alternator, which are the source of power for the lights and, sometimes, may also be the cause of an external socket for the addition of tools or other equipment. Grid, powered towers are linked to mains electricity instead of having a generator, whereas hybrid and solar towers may be equipped with a small generator as a backup but mainly use batteries and solar panels. Therefore, in the case of normal industrial and construction work, a light tower is basically a mobile generator with some powerful lights on top.
What is the price of mobile lighting tower?
The cost of a mobile lighting tower in India is very different for various types, powers, and features. A small basic LED tower (24 kW) with a petrol or a small diesel generator will usually cost you somewhere between75, 000 and 1.5 lakh. A mid, range diesel LED tower (510 kW) with a 46 m mast and a trailer mount will typically cost you anywhere from 2.5 lakh to 5 lakh. A big, heavy, duty tower (1015 kW) with a high, quality diesel engine (like Kirloskar or Kohler) and advanced controls can set you back by 5 lakh to 7 lakh or more. A mobile solar or hybrid tower is pricier than others; their prices usually start at around 3.5 lakh and go as high as 78 lakh for models with a high capacity. The price of a unit is influenced by the brand, the height of the mast, the number of the lights, and whether it is a new or a used unit, as well.
