Why is my geyser not getting hot?
A geyser stops producing hot water for a handful of straightforward reasons. The part that actually warms the water is a metal heating element - when it burns out, no heat is produced. Which heating element is used in geyser?
The part that heats the water inside an electric geyser is a simple metal rod, normally called an immersion heater. It is built from metals that resist electricity, mainly nichrome, stainless steel, copper or brass and the outside is plated with a nickel chromium skin so it lasts longer plus passes heat to the water quickly. The rod is long and round - it slips through a hole in the side of the tank and sits in the water. How to check a geyser element?
To check a geyser element, first switch the power off for safety. Take off the outer cover and pull the wires off the element. Set a multimeter to continuity or ohms then place one probe on each terminal. A number on the screen - about 10 - 16 ohms depending on wattage - shows the element is probably sound. Now leave one probe on a terminal plus place the other on the bare metal shell. A second reading here means the element is shorted to earth and must be replaced. Can a geyser heating element be repaired?
A geyser heating element that is damaged or burnt out cannot be fixed - you have to fit a new one. The element comes as a sealed unit and trying to open or mend it is both unsafe plus pointless. When the metal shows rust, cracks or electrical trouble, buy a matching part and put it in while you follow the safety rules. You may rinse light scale off the surface, but once the element has failed it will stay dead even after cleaning - you still have to remove it but also slide in a new one.
