Ice or very high or low temperatures, however, can lower accuracy.

An ultrasonic transducer exists to turn electricity into high pitched sound above 20 kHz and to turn returning sound back into electricity. It sends short bursts through air, water or solid material plus listens for echoes that bounce off objects, cracks or boundaries. The time between the burst and the echo gives the distance - the shape of the echo reveals information about the object or the material. Because the device both launches but also receives sound, it never needs to touch the target. Piezoelectric crystals supply the exact motion needed for the conversion and their performance does not depend on colour, dust or similar surface conditions.
What is a medical ultrasonic transducer (probe)?

How many types of UT are there?
Ultrasonic transducers come in many kinds. The main way to sort them is by shape, how they touch the part, how the crystals inside are laid out and what job they do. Industry lists more than ten common sorts. The straight beam contact type sends a longitudinal wave straight into the part plus is used to measure wall thickness.
