Resin beads inside the softener trap the calcium and magnesium and exchange them for sodium or potassium.Water Softeners remove the calcium and magnesium ions and traps them on its filter surface which acts as a magnet. Therefore, it exchanges these calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions which, in turn, creates softened water.
