Aggregate Impact Testing Machine An Aggregate Impact Testing Machine is a device used in Civil Engineering to determine the impact resistance of aggregates used in construction materials like concrete and road pavement. 1. Purpose of the Test The machine is used to find the Aggregate Impact Value (AIV), which indicates the toughness of aggregates or their ability to resist sudden shock or impact. This test is an important part of Materials Engineering for selecting suitable aggregates in road and building construction. 2. Main Parts of the Aggregate Impact Testing Machine Base Frame A heavy base that supports the whole machine and absorbs vibration. Cup (Impact Cup) A cylindrical steel cup in which the aggregate sample is placed. Hammer (Impact Hammer) A metal hammer that drops freely on the aggregate sample to apply impact load. Guide Tube A vertical guide that allows the hammer to fall from a fixed height. Measuring Cylinder Used to measure the volume of aggregates before testing. 3. Working Principle The test works on the principle of impact loading: Aggregates are placed in the impact cup. The hammer is allowed to fall from a standard height several times. The repeated impacts crush weaker aggregates. The crushed material is sieved and the percentage of fines produced is calculated. This percentage gives the Aggregate Impact Value (AIV). 4.
