What is a Heat Pump Water Heater? Heat pump water heaters absorb warmth from the air and transfer it to heat water. Hence they are also referred to as 'air-source heat pumps'. Air source heat pumps move heat between the air inside a home and the air outside a home, while ground source heat pumps (known as geothermal heat pumps) transfer heat between the air inside a home and the ground outside a home.
