What is a Heat Pump Water Heater? Heat pump water heaters absorb warmth from the air and transfer it to heat water. Hence they are also referred to as 'air-source heat pumps'. They operate on electricity but are roughly three times more efficient than a conventional electric water heater.Heat pump water heaters use electricity to move heat from one place to another instead of generating heat directly. Therefore, they can be two to three times more energy efficient than conventional electric resistance water heaters. To move the heat, heat pumps work like a refrigerator in reverse.Heat pumps transfer heat from one place to another by different air or heat sources. Air source heat pumps move heat between the air inside a home and the air outside a home, while ground source heat pumps (known as geothermal heat pumps) transfer heat between the air inside a home and the ground outside a home.
