A biological safety cabinet (BSC) is a primary engineering control used to protect personnel against biohazardous or infectious agents and to help maintain quality control of the material being worked with as it filters both the inflow and exhaust air.Biosafety cabinets (BSCs) are one type of biocontainment equipment used in biological laboratories to provide personnel, environmental, and product protection.The cabinet is designed for work with high risk biological agents in Biosafety Level 4 laboratories, where maximum containment and protection are required. Examples include Ebola, the Lassa virus and any agent with unknown risks of pathogenicity and/or transmission.The two biggest concerns for a chemical in a BSC are the chemical's flammability and toxicity. A buildup of flammable materials within a BSC may cause an internal fire or explosion. Toxic chemicals may reach room occupants if the BSC recirculates air to the room.
