Ripsaws are used for cutting wood with the grain, crosscut saws for cutting across the grain. The main difference between the saws is in the way the teeth are ground.In woodworking, a rip-cut is a type of cut that severs or divides a piece of wood parallel to the grain. The other typical type of cut is a cross-cut, a cut perpendicular to the grain. Unlike cross-cutting, which shears the wood fibers, a rip saw works more like a series of chisels, lifting off small splinters of wood.To make this cut, use a miter saw or a table saw for best results. A table saw will let you cut wider pieces of wood. Avoid using a band saw, as crosscutting wood is more strenuous on a blade and a band saw is more likely to burn the edges of the wood or result in rough cuts.The table saw is the tool of choice for many basic ripping and crosscutting operations. Often, jigs and fixtures are used to increase safety, accuracy, and speed. A number of common table saw set-ups for both ripping and crosscutting operations described below.
