A chemical earthing electrode is an advanced grounding device that uses a metal rod or pipe (usually copper or galvanized iron) surrounded by specialized Back Fill Compounds (BFC) to create a low-resistance path for fault currents. Unlike traditional methods that use salt and charcoal, chemical earthing relies on moisture-retaining, conductive minerals to ensure stable performance even in dry or rocky soil.Key Components Electrode: The primary conductor, often a GI (Galvanized Iron) pipe, pure copper rod, or copper-bonded steel. Backfill Compound (BFC): A chemical powder (like Bentonite or Graphite) that reduces soil resistivity and retains moisture. Earth Pit Cover: A protective chamber that allows easy access for periodic testing. Types of Electrodes Copper-Bonded: Features a steel core for strength with a copper coating for high conductivity and corrosion resistance. Pure Copper: Offers the highest conductivity and longest lifespan, ideal for critical industrial environments. Galvanized Iron (GI): A cost-effective solution for residential use, featuring a zinc coating to resist rust. Pipe-in-Pipe: Two concentric pipes with the internal gap filled with chemicals to increase surface area and current dissipation.
