Extraction Type: Aqueous extraction followed by deglycyrrhizination (removal of glycyrrhizin)
Extraction Process
- Harvesting & Cleaning: Mature licorice roots are harvested, cleaned, and dried.
- Drying : Roots are ground into fine powder for optimal extraction.
- Grinding : The powdered root is extracted with water to obtain the full spectrum of active compounds.
- Solvent Extraction: The glycyrrhizin compound is removed enzymatically or chemically to reduce the risk of side effects like high blood pressure and water retention.
- Filtration & Concentration: The deglycyrrhizinated extract is filtered and vacuum-concentrated to produce a thick syrup or paste.
- Separation & Purification : Active components like flavonoids (liquiritin, glabridin) are standardized.
Why Remove Glycyrrhizin?
- Glycyrrhizin, while medicinal, can cause elevated blood pressure, water retention, and electrolyte imbalance in high doses or prolonged use.
DGL retains the soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits of licorice without these side effects.
