A Borosil Clevenger apparatus is a piece of laboratory glassware used for the hydrodistillation of essential oils. It's a specific type of apparatus designed to separate essential oils from water, particularly when the oil is lighter than water. How it works: 1. Hydrodistillation:The material containing the essential oil is placed in the round bottom flask with water. 2. Heating:The flask is heated, causing the water and essential oil to vaporize. 3. Condensation:The vapors travel to the condenser, where they cool and condense back into liquid form. 4. Separation:The condensed liquid flows into the receiver. Because the essential oil is lighter than water, it will float to the top of the receiver, while the water (hydrosol) will collect at the bottom. 5. Collection:The separated essential oil can then be carefully drained from the receiver using the stopcock. Common uses: Essential oil extraction:The primary use is to extract essential oils from plants and other natural materials. Volatile oil determination:It can also be used to determine the amount of volatile oil in a substance. Other applications:Clevenger apparatus can be used in various other applications where separation of liquids based on density is required. Important considerations: Oil density:The Clevenger apparatus is designed for essential oils that are lighter than water. If the oil is heavier than water, it will sink to the bottom of the receiver and may be lost back into the flask with the hydrosol.
