ndustrial Grease Industrial grease is a semi-solid lubricant formulated to protect and lubricate machinery operating under heavy loads, harsh environments, or extended service intervals. It is made from base oil, thickener, and performance-enhancing additives, and is designed to stay in place, provide long-lasting lubrication, and protect components from friction, wear, corrosion, and contamination. Grease is preferred over oils in industries where oil leakage is unacceptable, or where machinery operates in dusty, wet, or vibrating conditions. Composition Base Oil (70–90%) Mineral oil, synthetic oil (PAO, ester, silicone), or bio-based oils. Determines temperature range and lubricity. Thickener (5–20%) Provides the grease's structure (gel-like consistency). Common industrial thickeners: lithium complex, calcium sulfonate, polyurea, bentonite clay, aluminum complex. Additives (1–10%) Tailor grease to specific industrial needs. Extreme Pressure (EP), Anti-wear (AW), antioxidants, corrosion inhibitors, tackifiers, solid lubricants (MoS₂, graphite). Key Properties of Industrial Grease NLGI Consistency Grade – ranges from soft (000) to very hard (6). Dropping Point – the temperature at which grease softens and begins to melt. Shear Stability – resistance to softening under mechanical stress. Water Washout Resistance – ability to stay in place under wet conditions. Load Carrying Capacity – withstands heavy loads without breakdown. Temperature Resistance – suitable for low (-40 °C) to high (200+ °C) environments. Types of Industrial Grease Lithium and Lithium Complex Greases: Most widely used; good balance of cost and performance. Calcium Sulfonate Grease: Excellent load capacity and water resistance; used in mining and marine. Polyurea Grease: Long service life, oxidation-resistant; ideal for electric motors. Aluminum Complex Grease: High water resistance, excellent adhesion. High-Temperature Greases: Clay-based or synthetic for furnaces and steel plants.
