A Jaw Flex Coupling (also known simply as a Jaw Coupling) is a mechanical coupling designed to connect two shafts in a way that transmits rotary motion and torque between them while accommodating slight misalignments, reducing vibration, and minimizing wear. This type of coupling is widely used in applications such as motors, pumps, conveyors, and other rotating machinery. Key Features and Characteristics of a Jaw Flex Coupling: Basic Structure: A Jaw Flex Coupling consists of three primary components: Two metal hubs: These are the parts that connect to the shafts of the machine. They are typically made of steel or aluminum, depending on the application. A flexible elastomer insert (or "spider"): This is the central component that fits between the two hubs. The insert is typically made from urethane, rubber, or other flexible materials, and it provides the ability to absorb shock, compensate for misalignment, and dampen vibrations. How It Works: The metal hubs are usually designed with jaw-like teeth, which mesh with the flexible elastomer insert. As the motor or drive shaft rotates, the hubs transfer rotational force to the elastomer insert, which then transmits the torque to the driven shaft. The elastomer insert flexes as it engages with the jaw teeth of the hubs, helping to cushion the connection and dampen vibrations, while accommodating slight angular, parallel, and axial misalignments between the shafts. Types of Jaw Flex Couplings: Standard Jaw Coupling: The most common type, using a simple elastomer insert (or spider) between the hubs. Larger Jaw Couplings: These are designed for high-torque applications and typically use more robust materials for the hubs and inserts. Laminated Jaw Couplings: These offer greater flexibility and are suitable for more demanding environments that require greater shock absorption and misalignment tolerance.
