Cyclohexanone is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a peppermint-like odor. It is a cyclic ketone, derived from cyclohexane, and finds widespread use in various industrial applications. One of the primary uses of cyclohexanone is as a solvent in paints, coatings, adhesives, and varnishes. Its strong solvent properties allow it to dissolve a wide range of resins, polymers, and other organic compounds, making it valuable in these applications. Additionally, cyclohexanone serves as a precursor in the production of adipic acid, a key component in the manufacture of nylon 6,6. It undergoes oxidation to form adipic acid, which is then used in the production of nylon fibers and plastics. Furthermore, cyclohexanone is employed as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of various organic compounds, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and plasticizers. It serves as a building block in the production of cyclohexanone oxime, which is used in the manufacture of caprolactam, another precursor to nylon 6,6.
