Low fin tubes are formed by passing the tube through a set of rollers which forms the fins from the parent material of the tube by making it flow in the desired way.This is very different from cutting grooves onto the tube as is often done by people wishing to take a short cut or who do not know better.It is possible to have internal grooves too for turbulation. The low fin tube has the following advantages: It increases the area on the shell side to 3 times that of bare tube. This is very useful when the shellside coefficient is lower. Is very efficient as the fins and tube are integral to each other.The biggest advantage is in the case of condensing fluids on the shell side. Here is what happens. Normally condensate forms a film on the tube blocking impeding further heat transfer. (This is exactly akin to pouring ice cold water into a tumbler where a film of condensate forms on the outer surface). If one clean the surface of the tumbler by wiping it clean, one can find that a fresh film rapidly forms. So there is merit in removing the film of condensate from the surface of the tube if more condensate is to be allowed to form. Because the shape of the tube surface is serrated instead of smooth in the case of the low fin tube, the condensate forms drops which fall off very rapidly instead of film. This is because the condensate flows into the grooves and is directed to the ends of the fins by gravity where it forms drops and falls off effectively wiping the tube clean. This self cleaning feature of the tube makes it the tube of choice for all condensing applications.The low fin tube is generally available in: Copper Cupro Nickel Aluminium / Admiralty Brass Carbon Steel However looking to its applicability especially in Ammonia condensers (where one cannot use copper tubes) we have also developed these tubes in Carbon SteelFins per inch: 19 FPI & 26 FPITube sizes: 1/2", 5/8", 3/4" & 1" OD.
