MIG stands for metal inert gas welding or sometimes it is known as Gas Metal Arc welding. This process is automated or semi-automated arc welding process in which inert gases are used as shielding gas and a consumable wire electrode is used. Principle. MIG works on basic principle of heat generation due to electric welding is generally used for large and thick materials. It employs a consumable wire that acts as both the electrode and the filler material. Compared to TIG welding, it is much faster, resulting in shorter lead times and lower production costs.A recommended wire feed speed would fall in the range of 240 to 290 ipm with travel speeds between 14 and 19 ipm. A good rule of thumb is to keep the welding wire stickout at 5/8 inch or shorter for small diameter wires.Appropriate protective footwear with substantial uppers must be worn. Close fitting protective clothing or overalls, leather apron and spats must be worn. Appropriate welding mask with correct grade lens must be worn. Oil free leather gloves must be worn when using this equipment. Rings and jewellery must not be worn.
