Tearing strength tester is a free-falling pendulum structure designed to perform an Elmendorf type tearing test. It helps evaluate the ballistic tearing strength of textiles, plastics, paper or board by applying sudden load to a half section of the material and ripping the sample apart. The test sample is clamped using sample holding fixtures. One can tighten the sample as per their test requirement. Once the sample is fixed the pendulum can be loaded with a defined weight required for the test and the pendulum is pulled at a fixed height and held with at a point. The pendulum is raised to the maximum possible height to gain the maximum potential energy. Then the pendulum is released on the specimen free falling on the sample tearing it apart. The same procedure can be repeated with distinct weight to calculate the point at which it fails to perform. While conducting the test, the force applied on the specimen must be applied in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the specimen. The force applied to the specimen is computed with the help of readings on the scale provided with the instrument.
