A metering pump is a form of reciprocating pump that uses positive displacement to release a precise amount of a liquid with each of its strokes. The rotary motion of the pump is converted into reciprocating motion through the use of a wheel and worm shaft.A reciprocating pump utilizes a crankshaft-connecting rod mechanism identical to internal combustion engines. The crankshaft-connecting rod mechanism converts the rotary movement of the crankshaft to a reciprocating linear movement of plungers or pistons. The plunger/piston movement creates volume changes.A metering pump is used to add small but accurate volumes of a liquid to other fluid streams or vessels. Metering pumps are also called dosing pumps and proportioning pumps. A metering pump must be able to deliver liquid with an accuracy of greater than 3% across a wide range of discharge pressures.
