Lightning arresters and earthing rods are metallic rods that protect the solar system, electrical wiring and other home appliances from the damaging effect of lightning strikes.A lightning rod and its associated grounding conductors provide protection because they divert the current from nonconducting parts of the structure, allowing it to follow the path of least resistance and pass harmlessly through the rod and its cables.The strength of electric current is greater around pointed objects. When lightning occurs, the current is attracted to the pointed conductor and from there it directly flows into the ground. This is the reason for a lightning conductor having pointed ends.Cranes are not lightning-proof: the principle of the lightning rod is based on combining the negative electrical charge of a storm with the positive electrical charge of the earth. The lightning bolt is attracted by metal conductors.
