It provides a controlled path for static electricity to travel safely to the ground, protecting workers from accidental shocks. Insulated Handle: Usually constructed from fiberglass or Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) for superior electrical insulation. High-end models often use closed-cell foam-filled tubular fiberglass to prevent internal moisture buildup. Conductive Probe/Hook: A metallic end-fitting, often a copper "U" hook or brass alloy, makes physical contact with the equipment to be discharged. Grounding Cable: A flexible copper cable (typically 6 feet or 3 meters long) that connects the conductive probe to an earth point. Grounding Clamp: A heavy-duty clamp, such as a bronze serrated jaw or crocodile clip, ensures a secure connection to a verified ground. Discharge Resistor (Optional): Some advanced sticks include internal or external non-inductive resistors to drain the voltage gradually rather than instantaneously, preventing arcing or damage to the equipment. Key Specifications & Standards Voltage Ratings: Devices are rated for specific voltage grades, ranging from 1.1 kV to 66 kV for standard industrial sticks, and up to 500 kV for specialized transmission line rods. Safety Certifications: Quality sticks often meet stringent standards such as ASTM F711 (for insulating tubes and rods) or IEC 60855. Visibility: They are typically manufactured in high-visibility colors like bright yellow or orange for easy identification in low-light or busy work environments. Operational Usage Preparation: The operator must first verify the earthing cable is securely attached to a known, approved earth point. Contact: Holding the insulated handle at the designated handgrip, the user touches the conductive hook to the component to be discharged.
