Description: A betel-nut cutter (sarota) from Gujarat. It is casted in brass and contains two animals interestingly juxtaposed to form the two blades of the cutter. One of the blade depicts a crocodile and another, a stylised animal figure.It needed shredding and cutting, not cracking. Thus, a slight variation of design transformed the nutcracker into a nutcutter. These nutcutters were mostly used to cut, peel or shred finely the areca nuts. And their recorded use in India goes back at least 700 years.
