Thermocouple is a type of temperature sensor that measures temperature by utilizing the voltage difference created when two different metals are joined together at one end. This voltage (known as the Seebeck effect) is proportional to the temperature difference between the junction of the two metals and the other ends (which are typically kept at a reference temperature). Thermocouples are widely used for temperature measurement in industrial, scientific, and research applications because they are durable, versatile, and capable of measuring a broad range of temperatures. Here's a detailed breakdown: Working Principle: A thermocouple consists of two wires made from different metals, which are connected at one end, forming a junction (called the measuring or hot junction). When this junction is heated or cooled, it generates a small voltage, which can be measured and related to temperature using known calibration curves. The other ends of the wires are typically connected to a cold junction (or reference junction), usually at room temperature or a known constant temperature. The voltage produced depends on the temperature difference between the hot and cold junctions. Types of Thermocouples: There are several types of thermocouples, each consisting of different metals or alloys, suited for specific temperature ranges or applications. Some common types include: Type K (Chromel-Alumel): The most widely used type, it has a broad temperature range (from -200°C to 1372°C) and is popular for general-purpose applications. Type J (Iron-Constantan): Good for lower temperature ranges, typically from -40°C to 750°C. Type T (Copper-Constantan): Known for precise low-temperature measurements, it works in the range of -200°C to 350°C. Type E (Chromel-Constantan): Offers higher output than Type K, suitable for temperatures between -200°C and 900°C. Type R (Platinum-Rhodium): Used for high-temperature applications, with a range from 0°C to 1700°C.
