The water pump pushes coolant from the radiator through the coolant system, into the engine and back around to the radiator. The heat that the coolant picked up from the engine is transferred to the air at the radiator. Without the water pump, the coolant just sits in the system. The pump can handle solids up to 2.4 inches, and because it can run without water, the pump is ideally suited for areas like industrial locations, agricultural plots, construction sites, and other locales where sludge and sediment are a primary concern. The term Self Priming is actually an industry term that describes the ability of a pump to create a partial vacuum by purging air from the intake hose and pump casing. All Honda pumps are self priming by definition. All self priming pumps require water to be added to the pump casing to start the priming process.
