The Crompton Greaves (CG) ZLA3E for 220 kV systems is a heavy-duty, gapless Metal Oxide Surge Arrester (MOSA). It is a station-class device designed to protect high-voltage substation equipment, such as transformers and reactors, from lightning and switching surges. Technical SpecificationsFor a standard 220 kV system (with a highest system voltage of 245 kV), the ZLA3E typically follows these parameters: Arrester Rated Voltage (): Usually 198 kV or 216 kV (rms). Max Continuous Operating Voltage (MCOV/): Approximately 168 kV to 175 kV (rms). Nominal Discharge Current (): 10 kA (peak) using an 8/20 µs wave. Line Discharge Class: Class 3 (or Class 4 for specific high-energy applications). Short Circuit / Pressure Relief Rating: 40 kA (rms). Lightning Impulse Withstand (Housing): 1050 kVp. Creepage Distance: Typically 6125 mm or higher, designed for heavily polluted outdoor environments. Key Features Active Elements: Composed of highly non-linear Zinc Oxide (ZnO) discs. These discs feature a "unique doughnut" construction to ensure uniform temperature and current distribution. Protective Housing: Available in Brown/ANSI-Grey Porcelain or Composite Polymer materials. Safe Failure Mode: Includes pressure relief devices and arc-diverting ports to prevent the housing from shattering during internal faults. Mounting: Supplied with an insulating base to allow for the connection of monitoring equipment. Monitoring AccessoriesFor EHV applications like 220 kV, the ZLA3E is almost always installed with: Surge Monitor/Counter (Model SC 07-1): A self-powered device that records the number of lightning or switching operations. Leakage Current Meter: An integrated milli-ammeter (typically 0–5 mA scale) used to monitor the health of the ZnO elements and surface contamination.
