An automatic tire changer is a machine that removes an old tire from a metal rim and fits a new one. It uses either air pressure or hydraulic force to do the work. The operator starts - placing the deflated wheel on a round table that turns. The table grips the rim from the inside or the outside, and the operator uses foot pedals to open or close the grip jaws. A metal arm with a blunt edge moves against the tire sidewall. This arm, driven by air cylinders, pushes the bead of the tire away from the rim so that the tire edge separates all the way around. A hinged arm then swings a metal duck-head-shaped tool close to the rim. The table spins and the tool slips the tire bead over the rim edge so that the old tyre lifts off. The operator removes the old tire and sets it aside. Before the new tire goes on, the operator spreads lubricant on its beads. The new tire is placed on the rim, and the table turns again. The duck head hook catches the lower bead but also pulls it under the rim flange. A small roller or bead depressor keeps the bead in the drop centre of the rim. An air line then sends a sharp burst of air between the tire and the rim so that both beads pop into place. A pressure gauge lets the operator add the exact amount of air required for the vehicle specification. Foot pedals control the table rotation, the clamp force and the air blast - the operator keeps both hands free. The machine works on rims from 10 to 24 inches in diameter and completes each change in a short time. It limits the need for manual force, lowers the risk of rim damage and keeps the service bay moving at a rapid pace.
