The intake valve opens when the piston reaches the TDC; compressed air from the high pressure tank rapidly flows into the cylinder. The pressure inside the cylinder rapidly increases with the intake pressure. Meanwhile, the mass and temperature inside the cylinder increase. If you are thinking how you can distinguish the intake from the exhaust valve, then they can most easily be differentiated by the diameter of the valve head. The intake valves have a larger diameter of the valve head, so they are larger.
