Direct current TIG (DC) welding is when the current flows in one direction only. Compared with AC (Alternating Current) TIG welding the current once flowing will not go to zero until welding has ended. In general TIG inverters will be capable of welding either DC or AC/DC welding with very few machines being AC only. Although it might not be the ideal method, you can TIG weld steel if AC power is all that's available, So, even though you can use AC and DC for TIG welding steel, AC is not your better choice. If you're buying a new machine for welding steel, get one that uses DC, which is more efficient for welding steel.These types of welding involve the creation of an electric arc between an electrode and the metal being welded. The electric arc provides heat to fuse the metals together. A power supply is used to generate the arc, which can either use an alternating current (AC) or a direct current (DC). TIG welding machines can be used to weld a variety of "ferrous metals" including mild steel & stainless steel, and also copper and chrome moly.
