The Blaine Air Permeability Apparatus is a laboratory device used to determine the fineness of cement particles by measuring the specific surface area of cement. Fineness affects hydration rate, strength development, and workability of cement. Blaine's method is based on the principle of air permeability through a compacted bed of cement, where finer particles offer more resistance to airflow. Components Permeability Cell / Cement Holder A cylindrical cell where a precisely weighed amount of cement is compacted. Provides uniform packing to ensure accurate airflow measurement. Air Pump / Manometer Connection Generates a steady flow of air through the cement bed. Pressure drop is measured using a manometer or U-tube. Manometer Measures the pressure difference across the cement bed. Typically uses mercury or water columns. Stopwatch / Timer Measures the time taken for a known volume of air to pass through the cement. Base and Frame Holds the apparatus steady and ensures leak-proof operation. Calibration Scale / Factor Used to convert flow-time readings into specific surface area (cm²/g). Working Principle A known weight of cement is compacted into the permeability cell. Air is made to flow through the cement bed under a constant pressure. The time for a fixed air volume to pass through is measured.
