Plasma cutters use compressed air or other gases, such as nitrogen. Ionisation of these gases takes place to create plasma. Typically, the compressed gases come into contact with the electrode and then ionise to create more pressure. When the pressure builds up, a stream of plasma is pushed towards the cutting head.Plasma cutters work by sending an electric arc through a gas that is passing through a constricted opening. The gas can be shop air, nitrogen, argon, oxygen. etc. This elevates the temperature of the gas to the point that it enters a 4th state of matter.Inverter plasma cutters allow for a high-frequency arc start that jump-starts the plasma before jumping the gap from the torch tip to the work surface.The basic principle is that the arc formed between the electrode and the workpiece is constricted by a fine bore, copper nozzle. This increases the temperature and velocity of the plasma emanating from the nozzle. The temperature of the plasma is in excess of 20 000°C and the velocity can approach the speed of sound.
