Unlike traditional steaming methods that use a stovetop, a microwave idli steamer is designed to steam idlis in a microwave oven, saving time and energy.
Here’s a quick guide to using a microwave idli steamer:
How to Use a Microwave Idli Steamer
Prepare the Batter:
- Make idli batter from rice and urad dal (split black gram). You can use store-bought batter as well.
- The batter should be fermented and have a slightly thick, pourable consistency.
Grease the Molds:
- Lightly grease the idli molds with oil to prevent sticking.
Pour the Batter:
- Pour the batter into each compartment of the idli molds. Don’t overfill them, as the batter will expand during steaming.
Stack the Molds:
- Place the filled molds into the tiered stand that comes with the steamer.
Steam in the Microwave:
- Put the entire stack into the microwave.
- Set the microwave to high power and steam for about 5 to 10 minutes. The exact time may vary depending on your microwave’s wattage and the amount of batter.
- You can check if the idlis are done by inserting a toothpick; if it comes out clean, the idlis are ready.
Remove and Cool:
- Carefully remove the hot molds from the microwave.
- Let the idlis cool for a few minutes before removing them from the molds.
