Hydraulic cylinders are used as linear actuators to apply unidirectional force and stroke in many marine and offshore engineering applications. The piston rod of these cylinders transmits the power from the displacement of pressurized hydraulic fluid via the piston inside the cylinder shell.The piston rod is typically a hard chrome-plated piece of cold-rolled steel that attaches to the piston and extends from the cylinder through the rod-end head. In double rod-end cylinders, the actuator has a rod extending from both sides of the piston and out both ends of the barrel.Single-rod cylinders are cylinders with a one-side piston rod and thus with a large piston area for extension and an area for retracting that is reduced by the piston rod area.
