They often consist of a handheld unit with a sensor probe which can be swept over the ground or other objects.Today's metal detectors are one of two types: Balanced Coil systems, which are general-purpose metal detectors using coils and electronic fields, and Ferrous-in-Foil systems, which use strong magnetic fields to detect harmful ferrous metallic contaminants (magnetic, containing iron) in products.
