The CKINSTO "Short Time Thermal Current Tester" (often referred to as a Short Time Current Test Setup or Short Time Overcurrent Test Set) is a specialized apparatus designed to evaluate the performance and durability of electrical components under short-duration, high-current conditions. The primary purpose of this equipment is to verify the component's ability to withstand the thermal and mechanical stresses induced by a sudden, intense fault current (like a short-circuit) for a specified short period without sustaining damage that would compromise its function. Key Applications and Function Components Tested: Primarily used for switchgear items such as circuit breakers, fuses, and protective relays, as well as other electrical components like busbars and connectors. Test Purpose: Thermal Stability: It verifies that the component's conducting parts and surrounding insulation can handle the heat generated ( I 2R losses) by the high current for the specified time (e.g., 0.5s, 1s, or 3s) without reaching a temperature that would cause failure or degradation. This relates to the Ith (Short-time withstand current). Dynamic/Mechanical Stability: It ensures the component can mechanically withstand the intense electromagnetic forces generated by the current peak during the fault condition without structural damage. Operation: The setup typically uses a high-current source to inject a precisely controlled, very large current (often in the thousands of amperes, e.g., 2000A up to 40,000A) into the component under test for a very brief, programmed duration. Modern versions often use a PLC-based touch screen HMI for automatic control, monitoring, and data recording (such as current and time curves). This testing is crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical protection and switching devices in compliance with national and international industry standards.
