UV chamberThe UV chamber, or reactor, holds the water and houses the UV light source. It's usually made of stainless steel, but other materials can be used for corrosive or salty water. UV lampsThe UV system should use medium-pressure lamps (200–320 nm) to control chloramines and microorganisms. Low-pressure lamps (254 nm) are biocidal but don't deal with chloramines as well. UV intensity sensorsThe UV equipment should have calibrated sensors that measure the output of all the UV lamps. UV doseThe UV system should be able to display the UV dose in units of energy per unit area. Third-party validationThe UV system should be validated by a third party. CapacityUV systems can have capacities ranging from 0.5 gallons per minute (gpm) to several hundred gpm. PretreatmentIf the water contains particles that may shield bacteria, pretreatment to remove turbidity may be required. Aspect ratioThe aspect ratio should be at least 15. This is calculated by dividing the length of the contact area by the hydraulic radius of the channel. Replacement lampsThere should be at least 15% of the total number of lamps available for immediate replacement.
