What is the formula for the Cobb test?
The Cobb test formula measures how much water paper or paperboard soaks up. The standard Cobb number, given in grams per square metre, is found - subtracting the dry mass from the wet mass multiplying the difference by 100 and dividing the result by the test area in square metres. Cobb Value (g/m²) = (Wet Weight - Dry Weight) × 100 / Sample Area (m²). Wet Weight is the mass after water contact - Dry Weight is the mass before contact - Sample Area is the part that touches the water. When the test piece is 100 cm², the area equals 0.01 m² - the division by 0.01 turns into a multiplication by 100. The short form becomes Cobb Value = (Wet Weight - Dry Weight) × 100. This number shows how much water the sheet holds. Packers and papermakers use it to check quality.
How to use cobb tester?
To use a Cobb tester, cut a circular sample that exceeds 100 cm² and record its dry weight. Lay the sample between the clamping plate plus the water chamber then fix it firmly. Turn the unit until the sample touches the water and add 100 ml of water to the chamber. Start a stopwatch but also let the sample absorb water for the set period, usually 45 - 60 seconds. When the time ends, turn the unit back, lift the sample out and remove surplus water - rolling blotting paper over it. Weigh the damp sample to find the weight gain - this figure yields the Cobb value.
