How does a compression tester work?
A compression tester shows how much pressure a single engine cylinder can raise at the top of its squeeze stroke. What is a compression test machine?
A compression test should be performed when an engine shows signs of mechanical trouble or when the structural integrity of a material needs to be checked. In engines the test is recommended if the vehicle misfires regularly, accelerates poorly, uses more fuel than usual or loses power for no clear reason. The test reveals faults in valves, piston rings, cylinder walls or head gaskets. For materials and parts, compression tests are carried out during quality assurance, product development or to confirm safety plus durability under crushing loads. Those tests are essential before a material is used in critical applications to ensure it meets the required specifications and will endure the expected stresses. Compression tests also compare batches, trace the cause of failures but also verify that parts are suitable for their intended use.
What are the two types of compression testing?
Static compression testing places a motionless sample under a load that rises step by step until the sample yields or breaks. Operators rely on this method for metals, plastics, concrete and packaging. It records compressive strength, modulus plus deformation while the load rises in a slow, controlled way. Dynamic compression testing strikes the sample with a rapid or impact load. The aim is to reproduce crashes, drops, vibrations or shocks. Parts that face sudden forces - automotive safety items, protective gear, electronic housings - undergo this test. The test shows how the material absorbs energy, resists impact and behaves when the strain rate is high but also it adds data that static tests do not provide.
How do I perform a compression test?
To perform an engine compression test, first warm the engine to normal operating temperature then switch it off. Remove all spark plugs, disable the ignition and fuel systems and fully open the throttle to allow maximum air flow. Screw the compression tester adapter into the first cylinder's spark plug hole. Have an assistant crank the engine for around 5 - 8 seconds while you watch the gauge - note the highest pressure reading. Repeat the procedure for each cylinder recording all values. Compare readings to the manufacturer's specifications and to each other. Cylinders should generally be within about 10 - 15 % of one another - low or uneven readings indicate possible issues like worn rings leaking valves or a blown head gasket.
What tools are required for a compression test?
For a basic engine compression test, you need a compression tester kit that includes a pressure gauge, a hose and threaded adapters that fit into the spark plug or glow plug holes. You also need a ratchet, extension bars plus the correct spark plug socket to remove all the plugs without damage. You must disable the ignition or fuel system so the engine cannot start while you crank it - pull the relevant fuses or disconnect the coils and injectors. Wear gloves but also safety glasses to shield your hands from hot parts and your eyes from any fuel or oil that might spray out. Keep a notepad or a phone ready so you can write down the pressure reading for every cylinder as well as later check each value against the figures the manufacturer gives.

The exact figure depends on the kind of vehicle, the area and whether the mechanic performs both a dry plus a wet test.
