Purchase price is low and the owner hardly needs to open the cabinet but the working life is only two to five years. A servo stabilizer costs more at the time of purchase or the motor needs a brief service every few years but the unit lasts ten to twenty years.
Which is better, servo or relay stabilizer?
Servo stabilizers outperform relay stabilizers for most tasks because they are more accurate and more reliable. A servo model holds the output voltage within one percent of the target, while a relay model moves the voltage in five-to-ten-percent steps. A small motor turns the autotransformer inside the servo unit - the correction is smooth and continuous - the unit reacts faster, never cuts the power, lasts longer and copes better with the sudden surge that appears when delicate equipment like computers or medical devices is switched on. Relay stabilizers cost less plus are simpler - they are adequate for ordinary household appliances but their contacts wear out, they click audibly, they switch slowly and the voltage keeps drifting up and down - as a result they usually last two to five years, whereas a servo unit lasts ten to twenty. Choose a servo model for a home that contains electronics or for any industrial site that needs tight tolerance - choose a relay model only when the budget is tight and high precision is unnecessary. The servo version costs more at the time of purchase but it gives better value over the years.
What happens when a servo loses power?
Servo stabilizers stop regulating voltage when mains power is lost. If the unit has a bypass path, the incoming line is fed straight to the load. With no power, the servo motor stands still and the automatic correction ends - the output voltage becomes the same as the unstable mains. Equipment that is still connected sees the raw grid voltage - surges or dips can hurt delicate devices like computers, erase data or force them to shut down. The stabilizer itself contains no UPS - when the mains fails the supply is broken. High-grade models either switch themselves out of circuit or open the output through a relay - no live parts are exposed. How to identify a servo stabilizer?
Servo stabilizers are easy to spot because of the way they look, the labels they carry and the way they behave. Inside a strong metal case you will see a small motor called a servo, a carbon roller that slides on an autotransformer plus a buck boost transformer. The front panel shows either digital or dial type voltmeters for the incoming and outgoing voltage, a current meter, small circuit breakers, a switch that lets you choose automatic or manual control but also lights that warn if the load is too high or if one phase is missing. A label on the casing reads “Servo Voltage Stabilizer” and states that the output stays within ±1 percent of the set value.
