Mechanical Screed Price, Manufacturers & Suppliers
A mechanical screed is a specifically designed concrete finishing device made to give a smooth finish and a level surface through a vibrating, oscillating-type function that prepares a surface for the best quality in concrete placement and finishing. This type of construction equipment is crucial for performing the best possible finishing of concrete in building construction, roadways and industrial flooring projects where the relative "elevation and surface smoothness" has structural, functional and/or aesthetic importance. The primary application for the use of a mechanical screed involves the finishing of concrete slabs in residential construction such as sidewalks or some outdoor living applications. Extending the use to warehouse floor construction are areas done without being limited to a single-pass lineal screeding area finishing operation. A lightweight aluminium frame construction, powerful vibrating mechanism and ability to change in length configurations aid in the best possible concrete consolidation and surface levelling over extended periods in finishing operations. Integrated mechanical-based vibration technology provides a mechanical screed the ability to obtain consistency for the density of the concrete surface at the point of placement and achieve the optimal degree of smoothness while relieving air bubbles and densifying to the proper degree for superior concrete performance and durability properties to be maximised. The use of a mechanical screed offers a standout way of increasing ergonomically efficient practices in a finishing operation to reduce operator fatigue and enhance the efficient time a task could take when configured with multiple handling positions with a predetermined balanced weight distribution for comfortable use over a longer duration in any required application of concrete placement. The screed length, vibration specifications and handle positions can also be configured and designed for optimised finishing performance with satisfactory performance at various placements in practising fine concrete finishing. Mechanical Screed Related Questions/Answers
What is the purpose of a screed?
One of the uses of screed is levelling freshly poured concrete or other flooring material. The screed removes excessive material from the freshly poured surface so that a flat, even surface can be established at best. The screed will also be used to fill in any low spots to make the surface level. It can be either manual or powered depending on the work size. Manual screeds are generally long, straight boards or tools that can be dragged across the surface manually. Power screeds use vibrating motors to aid surface compaction and levelling. Screeding is a very important step in preparing any flooring. This is the stage before fixing tiles, carpets, or any floor covering. To ensure that there is appropriate drainage and alignment of the surface, the screed floor ensures that no water lies stagnant and cracks over time. It strengthens and makes the surfaces durable. Most of the time, screeding is used in buildings, flooring, and paving jobs. It also improves both the function and appearance of the floor. Accurate screeding effort and time at the finishing stage should prove worthwhile in the end.
What are the two types of screeding?
Screeds often occur in two forms: bound and unbonded. Both are levelling floors but are used differently in practical applications. A bonded screed is laid directly on a concrete slab. A bonding agent ensures that the screed achieves a good bond to the base. It can be laid in thinner sections. It is normally only used where a good bond and load-bearing surface are considered essential. Therefore, areas of heavy foot traffic would best be served by the application of a bonded screed. Conversely, an unbonded screed is laid over a dividing layer—usually composed of polythene or plastic. This enables some relative movement during shrinkage between the screed and the slab and keeps the screed from bonding with the base slab. Usually thicker, an unbonded screed helps to reduce shrinkage-related cracking by means of movement. Both types have advantages; their selection depends on the kind of structure, the loads that the floor shall be subjected to, and the anticipated nature of use. In some instances, a third variety called floating screed is applied over insulation layers. All types give a smooth, strong, level surface.
What material is screed?
Usually consisting of cement, sand, and water, screed is mortar. Other materials can occasionally be used, such as lime or different additives; still, a cement-sand screed is the most often used. This produces a flat surface level, somewhat easy application, and a strong mix. Usually covering concrete floors, screeds help to prepare the floor for finishing treatments, including carpeting, vinyl, or tiles. Usually the mixture is for one part cement to three to five parts sand. Water is added to make the mixture workable. In some particular cases, self-levelling screed is used. This screed contains special chemicals that help it flow and level itself. This has proved to be very useful when there is a need for a very flat surface. Anhydrite screed, based on calcium sulphate, may also be used for lighter weight or thermally insulating purposes. This screed will flow easily and dry to a finish that is smooth. Additives such as fibres or mesh may be incorporated for reinforcement and crack resistance. Thus, the choice of screed depends on the kind of building application, load, and the environment. All screeds certainly aim at proper mixing and application towards any favourable result.
How thick is screed?
The thickness of screed varies according to the type and purpose. For instance, the traditional cement-sand screed is put down at a minimum thickness of 25-40 mm usually. Such is also the case with bonded screeds that are placed directly on the base floor. On the other hand, unbonded screeds are at least 50 mm thick. These are put down over a separating layer such as plastic sheeting. Usually at least 65 mm thick, floating screeds are used over insulation or underfloor heating. The thickness increases to 75 mm and more for heavier loads. Usually, self-levelling screeds are pretty thin. This can be from 3 mm then up to about 30 mm, depending on the product. Mostly, the use of self-level screeds is involved in fine surface levelling. Manufacturer recommendations must be strictly adhered to because this influences the dryness period as well as strength. Sometimes even the load fails from hollows or thin screeds. Drying thinner screeds will take more time. They have to be moisture content verified before the last flooring is laid. On whichever floor system, quality thickness provides longevity, bonding, and a smooth surface.
What is screed vs concrete?
Though for varied uses, screed or concrete is connected to construction activities. For structural projects including foundation, beam, and slab, it is known as concrete, a robust and lasting substance blended from cement, sand, gravel, and water. Its great strength suggests that it should have a heavy weight. Screed is a smoother mix, generally composed of cement and fine sand without having gravel. It is laid over concrete floors to attain a level and smooth surface. Screeding is not used for structural substantiation. It is applied thin, between 25 mm and 75 mm usually. Rough and coarse, concrete is. Smooth and finer screed. It is the last treatment of floors before finishing, such as tiles, carpet, or vinyl. The concrete works as the base, and the screed is the top layer. Screed also conceals underfloor heating pipes, providing a flat surface. In summary, concrete gives strength, and screed gives smoothness. Use of both is very important but used at different stages of construction. Proper use of each ensures a stronger and neater finish.
How much does screed cost?
For a standard screed, costs would vary according to location and types of materials. Most traditional sand and cement screed is common and economical. The screed that is very basic would cost about ₹30-60 for floor screeding work carried out by the contractors, no matter if general or special. The more advanced screed types cost more. Polymer-modified screed or self-levelling screed ranges from ₹80 to ₹150 per square foot. The exact price depends on the thickness and the work required. These types offer smoother and quicker finishes. They are used in commercial buildings. They are also used in hospitals. These places need high precision and clean surfaces. Screed thickness also affects costs. A thin screed would work out at a cheaper rate per square foot than a thick one. Further, if surface preparation, levelling, and insulation are part of the job, the costs would increase. Labour charges are generally included, but rates vary from city to city and contractor to contractor. In the metro cities, slightly higher costs may be because of transportation and skilled labour. Particularly for large-scale projects, contractors tend to give a better rate. It is recommended to ask for the quotation clearly specifying materials, labour, and other ancillary works required.
How do you calculate cement screed?
To calculate a cement screed, an area measurement has to be made first. Multiply its length by its width, thus obtaining the area in square feet/metres. Then, decide how thick a layer of the screed should be. Convert thickness into meters, if necessary. To find the volume, then, multiply the area by thickness. Suppose one takes a 10 square metre region with a 0.05 metre thickness. The volume will be 0.5 cubic meters. The cement screed usually follows these mixing ratios of 1:3 or 1:4 (cement to sand). Now calculate the cement quantity. For a 1:4 mix, divide that volume by 5. That is the cement share. Multiply it by the density of cement (roughly 1440 kg/m³) to transform it into weight. The remaining four parts are sand. Multiply the volume by 4/5 to obtain the sand quantity. Add 10% more to offset losses. This method would calculate only an approximate amount of cement and sand required. Water is added to get the desired workability. Always round up amounts of materials for safety.
What type of screed is best?
Screed type needs to be specific to the application and environment. For instance, traditional screed is popular, though this is commercial cement sand screed. It's much stronger, cheaper, and easy to apply. Suitable for application in residential use and light commercial use floors. The best screed for it is fast-drying because it dries up quickly and allows early usage. It would shorten the construction time and be great for projects with tight schedules. This results in increased flexibility and strength of the screed. It is designed specifically for areas intended for heavy foot traffic or machinery. Cracking resistance is also better than ordinary screed. Self-levelling screed is ideally suited for smooth finishes. It pretty much spreads with comfort. It finds application in hospitals, malls, and commercial spaces. The liquid screed, or slack screed, is uncomplicated when pouring and drying flat. This has good performance with underfloor heating systems due to excellent thermal conductivity. Magnesium oxide screeds are highly environmental, moisture resistant, and can be applied in green buildings. The best screed depends on load, use, time, and finish. Choose the screed based on your project needs. Always check what the site requires. Select accordingly. Always consider the advice of an expert on on-site project requirements.
What is the minimum thickness of screed concrete?
The minimum thickness of screed concrete depends on its type and purpose. Traditional bonded screeds usually get set at not less than 25 mm; this thickness ensures a proper bond to the base. Where unevenness presents problems, slight extra thickness may be required. Unbonded screeds are placed on a damp-proof membrane and need at least a 50 mm thickness. The additional thickness helps prevent cracking. Floating screeds are applied over insulation. These require a minimum thickness of 65 mm. If heating is included in the floor, it moves up to 75 mm. Self-levelling screeds are thinner, as they can be applied from 2 mm to the maximum of 15 mm thickness. Mostly, they serve to smoothen the surface before final floor finishes. The other minimum thickness is also determined by concrete strength and load anticipated. Thinner screeds require careful handling to avoid early damage. Guidelines for each type should be strictly followed. Good thickness selection will enhance longevity and performance. Always consult a standard and professional before screeding any surface.
What is a power screed machine?
Construction uses a power screed machine to level and smooth newly poured concrete. It has a vibrating motor connected to a long metal screed bar and helps in the speedy development of an even surface. As the motor starts running, the screed bar begins to vibrate. The vibrations help to settle the concrete. They also remove air pockets. At the same time, the surface gets levelled. The machine moves smoothly across the slab. This process ensures an even finish. The power screed is a nonmechanical contraption, and it is manually guided either with the aid of one or two workers, who pull or push the equipment across the wet concrete. The screed saves time and effort and results in a better finish compared to manual screeding. Power screeds come in various sizes. While some are larger and more fit for extensive areas like roads and large flooring, others are meant for little works and limited slabs. Mostly built of lightweight materials like aluminium, these screed machines. In construction work, this machine finds its utility in projects like pavement, flooring, and industrial slabs. It improves surface smoothness and time efficiency.
What is a concrete screeder machine?
The concrete screeder is one of the machines in construction. It levels and smoothes freshly laid concrete. The system has a long screed blade. The blade is connected to a motor that produces vibrations that help settle the concrete. The screeder levels the concrete; it also removes all surplus materials from the surface to give it a level finish. Thus, a concrete screeder lowers the manual effort required to perform such tasks; thus, it is faster. Concrete screeder machines are also available in various types. Some types are handheld, while some others are walk-behind or ride-on types. This choice depends on the size of the job. Larger machines are utilised for big slabs; handheld screeders are great for tiny areas. For flooring, pavements, and slabs, the machine comes in handy. Reducing air pockets helps to increase strength. The method finds applications in both commercial and residential construction. Concrete screeding guarantees durability in addition to improving quality. It also is a necessary instrument for obtaining polished and professional concrete surfaces.
How long can a concrete screed machine span?
Concrete screed machines will have spans of varying lengths depending on the type and model of the screed machine. Handheld screed machines generally have spans from 3 to 4 meters for small to medium spaces. They are light and easy to handle. One could argue that longer blades of vibrating screed machines—which span 4 to 6 metres—are fit for bigger concrete slabs. They save time and effort by helping to cover a greater area on the first attempt. Conversely, the laser screed machines are more advanced, with probable spans ranging from 8 to 12 metres and beyond. These are used in industrial floors and large commercial sites for their high accuracy and level, even surface display. A blade length appropriate for the size of the working area should be used. Longer spans will yield smoother results on larger areas. Smaller spans will guarantee better control in tight areas. Choosing the right screed span enhances efficiency and ensures a good surface finish. Check the specifications of the machine before use. Right span helps in better concrete placement and finish.
